I personally think that the Dead's skull w/ lightening bolt w/ the red white and blue is the most and possibly easily recoginsable logo in rock history. Now this can be purely subjective like art and the music itself but what comes close? The Stones Tongue, the slanted VH for Van Halen, the arrow for The Who.To me it's the Dead hands down. What lead me to this was I was just on the road and on a vans hood was the logo and yea instantly knew this guy is a DH.I know you have the dancing bears and all the other assorted minor ones but the skull just does it for me.

Just another day....

BTW - Hot Tuna is returning to FF12 this year. Two sets - one acoustic, one electric, plus a workshop.

They just DON'T make hair like Del's anymore.

When I was kid, the barbers all wore their hair like his and they would harmonize gospel songs while trimming.

"Swing low sweeeeet chariot..."

Enjoy,

Agreed. I don't know if I see more stealies than any other band logos because I look for them, or just happen to see them, but I've seen so many stealies and other GD bumper stickers driving around NJ and NY.

I've also had a few instances driving around, where I'll be playing the GD and I'll drive by someone with a GD bumper sticker, and we exchange friendly nods. A few weeks ago actually, I saw a car in front of me with a stealie, and slowly passed him while blasting Scarlet Begonias. As I began to pull up to him in the adjacent lane, Jerry sang "In the thick of the evening when the dealing got rough," to which the dude next to me promptly shouted "She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff!" Little things like that are just another aspect of the GD that make them so special and amazing.

While "stealie" is very recognizable, i think it takes a back seat to the Beatles "apple" logo as far as most recognizable. I also think the Stones "Tongue" is more recognizable as well....IMO

or Pink Floyd's Prism from DSOM

Thing is that Deadheads will slap that Stealie onto just about everything they own.

The Beatles apple logo is (for the most part) only recognizable to people over 40. To most young people today it would just be a green apple. The Stones' tongue may be more recognizable worldwide, but in the States I'd wager that the SYF is more recognizable.

I don't know.
I would bet that there are many more Beatles fans under the age of 40 than there are GD fans under the age of 40.
The GD are/were like licorice after all, whereas, the Beatles continue to have mass appeal, even almost 50 years after the debut of the Apple logo.

Edit: actually, I'll not only bet, I'll guarantee that there are more Beatles fans under 40 just based on Beatles Rock Band game sales.

The Beatles certainly have more casual fans than the Grateful Dead, but I would argue that the GD have more passionate fans than the Beatles. Not to mention that you rarely see the Apple logo anywhere (especially if you're only downloading from itunes) but you see the SYF on almost everything. I see SYF stickers on cars all the time, but I don't know if I've ever seen a Beatles Apple sticker on a car. And I would also wager that at least 75% of those Rock Band game sales are for people over 40.

Clearly GD fans are much more passionate (obsessed?),it would be hard not to be. but are far fewer in number.
Are you on the west coast? I'm in the Philly metro area and I rarely see Dead stickers of any kind on cars anymore. Perhaps you see more because you are closer to the epicenter of Dead-dom?

I'm glad the E72 ice cream kid never became the band's official logo, who knows what people would have called it.

That's the logo that first came to my mind.

Is the Dark Side of the Moon prism a logo? That might be up there too.

What about the artist formerly known as prince's symbol?

Done for contractual/legal reasons.

Seeing him at DNA Lounge in few weeks. Should be crazy....

Good call. I see he's coming to the Roseland Theater in Portland. Early show is sold out, but there are $300 tickets to the reserved seating in the late show, starts at 11:30. I haven't seen an early/late show billing in years.

What I have my eye on that same night is Dr. Lonnie Smith. Now that would be a great show.

Have you heard of Live Wire? I think it would fit into your artist profile. Live stage acts with quality musicians. It's broadcast on OPB 91.5 public radio. Check it out, maybe it could work at GST.

When I added DSOTM to itunes, the album art came up as a head with a rainbow coming out of its mouth, instead of the prism. It sucks.

I think to qualify as a really standout logo it has to be purely symbolic, no mentioning of the band by name. That disqualifies The Who, for example.

The%2520Who.jpg

The Apple logo also doesn't count because it was a record label logo not the band logo. The Beatles logo was of course:

So to me it's a straight run contest between the Stones Tongue and the Dead's Stealie, and my guess is that in terms of global recognition the Tongue wins.

I would agree. And luckily the new cops dont know what it (Stealies) means (see negative connotation) anymore!

I think the Stones 'Tongue' would be the most recongnized
IMHO, but a grate post anyhoo.
But: http://archive.org/post/443517/saw-a-deadhead-sticker-on-a-cadilac . The stones and the who cant say we are everywhere... (sry for the long winded prior post)
And the red, white and blue doesn't always have to be that
way. Esp if you drive a red truck:
Ok, its seen Santa Fe summers and Denver and Ohio winters ~
its freakin pink by now...

have a good Friday, or a Good Friday, which ever way your

Hate those friggin' bears! I would completley agree. Not my favorite logo by the band. I prefer Rosemary to skull/lightning bolt.
